Working Together to Prevent Suicide

Suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally and at the same time the second leading cause of death among the youth between the ages of 15-29 years. From WHO statistics about 4 people commit suicide in Kenya daily. Universities of higher learning are a focal area where the majority of individuals fall within the age bracket most affected by suicides based on statistics and thus a key determinant of the interventions to be put in place and how to craft the same. It’s armed with these insights that we collaborated with Mind Your Mind – JKUAT, a club in JKUAT and the health secretary, JKUAT Students’ Association (JKUSA) to host a panel discussion to spotlight the burden of suicides, contributing factors, the nexus between suicides and mental health as well as outline some avenues through which students could get the needed help.
